My name is Vasco Nunes Filipe, and I am a documentary photographer born in 2000 in Lisbon, Portugal.
My journey began in 2019 when my father lent me his old Canon AT-1 to use that summer. It was through this camera that I first discovered my passion for photography.
During the challenging years of completing high school and figuring out my future, I turned to skating and surfing as a way to cope with the pressure. It was then that I realized that whatever path I chose in life, it had to include three core values: Observing, Loving, and Helping. I came to understand that documentary photography was the only field where I could consistently apply these values in my daily work.
This realization led me to take a break from high school for a year and enroll in the Portuguese Institute of Photography (IPF) in Lisbon, where I began to find my direction.
After learning the fundamentals of photography, I felt the need to expand beyond Portugal, despite my deep affection for the country. I recognized that Portugal could not offer the opportunities or conditions I needed to pursue documentary photography as a career. In mid-2021, with the support of my family, a partner and her family, I moved to France and Switzerland. There, I worked to fund my future photography studies in Paris, captured the stunning landscapes of the Alps, and completed my high school diploma, which had been postponed.
Enrolling in Speos International School of Photography in Paris marked a pivotal moment in my life. Over the course of two years, I refined my skills, gained valuable knowledge, and solidified my commitment to documentary photography as my lifelong profession.
I am currently based in France, with plans to relocate to the southwest of France, where I intend to establish my permanent base.
My heart is on long-term documentary projects focused in Portaiture, Humanitarian Crisis and Conflicts. I am open to commissioned work.
